Fly Fishing the Upper Genesee River

The Canandaigua Lake Trout Unlimited meeting for April 19th will welcome Brent Kelley, President of the Upper Genesee River Chapter of TU. Come to hear about fishing the Upper Genesee: the trout, the flies, access, secret spots, and all! Brent Kelley has been fishing (and tying flies for) the Upper Genesee since accepting a posting as a faculty member at Alfred State College and has also become an ardent steward of the river, serving as president of the local TU chapter for many years.  TU National awarded him a "TU Distinguished Service Award" in 2008. This meeting (Monday, April 19th) will begin at 730pm at the Canandaigua Wegman's.

Guests and friends are always welcome to our meetings. Remember to bring dollars or flies for the 50-50 raffle!

Prez sez . . Travel Adventures

Thanks to the guys that helped out at the TU table and/or as instructors at the Angler's Workshop: Dick Steinheider, Gary Wood, Dennis Burr, Norm Brust, Max Hillring, Dave Eveland, and Will Faber. We gained a few (actually a lot) of new subscribers to our Tight Lines newsletter, and generated student interest for the Fly Fishing School.

Jim Cantin needs your help to make the Chapter's Fly Fishing School a success. A couple of instructors are needed for a couple of the classes and help is also needed for assistance during the day (instruction, breakfast and lunch, general assistance during the day, etc.). Help out, OK? Call Jim at 585/454-4250 or send him an email as soon as you can. Thanks.

Well deserved placques were presented to Jerry Luzum and Al Kraus at the March meeting as a special thanks for all of their support and leadership over many years past. Give them another word of thanks when you see them again next.

The Simms shirts finally arrived. Thanks Norm for all of your efforts and correspondence to get these for us. They look great. I understand that a few are still available for purchase for those that failed to get in on the original order.

I'am goin' fishin'.

Angler's Workshop Donation

Note received from Craig Dennison: “We raised $800 for TU and UFF through Angler's Workshop. All but three instructors agreed to donate their stipend. Ironically, it was an even split to both chapters, with several members choosing to divide their portion equally with both chapters. I'm ready to write a $400 check for each chapter. Not bad for a first time event!”

Fly Fishing the Upper Genesee River

The Genesee River is a unique river system in this area that provides year around trout fishing with plenty of public access.  The surrounding countryside is hospitable and the drive not all that long.

For flyfishermen the opportunities for a very satisfying trip are excellent regardless the level of skill possessed by the angler.  In short, the river offers a little something for everyone.

One of the few major waterways that flows south to north, New York inherits the Genesee River pretty much fully formed from Pennsylvania.  The headwaters (comprised of three major branches) are fairly pristine flowing through a very sparsely populated area. Although the gradient becomes much flatter in New York, there are good stream conditions through much of the year.  The primary high quality trout waters are closer to the state line, but trout are reliably resident anywhere south of Belmont (about 22 river miles).

Upper Genesee Brown

After devastating floods by hurricane Agnes in 1972 major reconstruction of the river channel was spearheaded by the Army Corps of Engineers.  The present river is a hybrid of natural and engineered waterways.Dockside.net

In addition to the main river there are several tributaries offering populations of brown and rainbow trout adding to the wild brookies that are dispersed throughout the system.  Most years facilitate substantial holdover conditions allowing fish to reach trophy size. Hatches are also good with excellent dry fly fishing for most of the warmer months.  Anglers will find mayfly, stonefly and caddis hatches in typical situations along with terrestrial fishing during the warmer months. ~~ Brent Kelley

Notes from the March 2010 Meeting

Jean Chaintreuil (Chapter President) brought the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.  Visitors were invited to introduce themselves; several visitors stood up to say hello. Jean sent around an “Attendance Record” for everyone to sign.  Jean indicated we had about 40 members at both of the last two meetings.

Jean indicated that anyone wanting to join the Chapter and participate in our events should contact Norm Brust at nbrust@rochester.rr.com.  Information about the Chapter can be found at www.canandaigualaketu.org .

Jerry Luzum indicated that the Chapter’s Fly Tying School continued to go very well.  Jerry reported that we have three ladies in the class and two Veterans from the Healing Waters Program.  There are two more sessions to go, the last will be held on 24 March.  While Jerry was up to talk, Jean presented him with a plaque in recognition of his excellent service to the Chapter.

Brian Pitre reported that he was going to a meeting in Batavia regarding the VA Healing Waters Program and if anyone wanted to join him they were welcome to do so.  Brian also reported that in addition to the two Veterans currently taking the Fly Tying Class there were going to be five Veterans in the Fly Fishing School.  Anyone wanting to help with the Healing Waters Program should go to the Chapter’s web site and fill out a volunteer form.

Al Kraus reported that the first two day Float Stocking Session for 2010 would be held on the 30th and 31st of March.  More help is needed if we are going to Float Stock versus just dump the trout at the bridges.  Al sent around a sign-up sheet and indicated anyone wanting to help or get on the Float Stocking Notification List should contact him at krausengr@earthlink.net.  While Al was up to talk, Jean presented him with a plaque in recognition of his excellent service to the Chapter.

Service awards

Jerry Luzum (l) and Al Kraus with placques presented at
the March 15th meeting for outstanding service and leadership
to our Chapter.

Al also indicated that he was looking at organizing the clean-up of another five mile section of the Cohocton River in 2011.  He asked the assembled members if they would support cleaning up another five mile section of the Cohocton and the majority of the members in attendance indicated they would do so.  The Town and Village of Cohocton have already expressed an interest in participating.

Jim Cantin reported that actions were being taken to organize the Fly Fishing School, which is to be held on 24 April at Onanda Park.  The cost will be $55 and the program will go from about 9 AM to 3 PM.  Jim indicated he needed more support.  Anyone wanting to help with or attend the Fly Fishing School should contact Jim at jcantin@leveragingtechnology.com .

Craig Dennison announced that the Angler’s Workshop he was organizing was all set to go, starting at 9 AM on March 20th, at the Twelve Corners Middle School in Rochester.  Craig thanked those members who were helping with the program and invited all members to attend.

Craig also mentioned the Chapter’s annual trip to the West Branch of the Delaware, to be held June 3rd to June 5th.  This is always a great trip; anyone wanting to participate should contact Craig at craigdennison1@yahoo.com

Jean indicated he still needed a few more volunteers to man the “TU Table” at the Angler’s Workshop.

Jean reported that most of the Simms shirts ordered by members had arrived and he had three extra shirts (L and XL) on hand if anyone would like to buy one.

The regular raffle, which is held each meeting, was conducted.  Several members won various prizes: cash, flies, and donated fly-fishing goodies.

Jean announced that the main speaker during the April 19th meeting will be a TU member from the Wellsville area who will talk about fishing the upper Genesee River.

Jean adjourned the business meeting and introduced Web Pearsall from the DEC, Region #8.  Web talked about the “state” of the DEC and findings of several stream surveys conducted within this portion of New York State. ~~ Al Kraus
