Meeting: Monday, April 2st
Douglaston Salmon River visit and report

Salmon River Guide Dave (Rocky) Rockwell and Douglaston Salmon Run Manager Garrett Brancy will discuss Atlantic Salmon and the Douglaston Salmon Run at the Canandaigua Lake Trout Unlimited Chapter meeting on Monday, April 21st. The meeting is at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center Auditorium and begins at 7:30pm.

Rocky Rockwell will present the “History of Lake Ontario Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, its Extirpation and Recovery.” There have been several efforts to reestablish this native fish and over the last 20 years the DEC has been successful; we are seeing annual summer runs, especially on the Salmon River (Pulaski, NY). Douglaston Salmon Run Manager Garrett Brancy will cover some of the many improvements to the fishery, specifically at the Douglaston Salmon Run access.

Friends and visitors are always welcome.
We will have our usual raffle.
So . . . Remember to bring dollars or flies!

Attention Women Fly Fishers ...

In the fall of 2012, TU launched a campaign aimed at getting more women to sign up as members. In doing so, women were offered complimentary trial memberships over the course of the year. Over 2,500 women signed up! What a great success. And, TU can boast a 13 percent retention rate so far on these trial members.

But, TU can do more! So, they are pleased to announce the launch of a limited time offer. From March 1 - May 31, TU is reviving the offer to sign up women as new members, at no cost. In addition, women can renew for half price, at a special $17.50 rate. No better time to join the Canandaigua Lake Chapter, or renew, than now.

And to change Chapters ...

Anyone can call TU at 1.800.834.2419 and have their membership moved from one chapter into another chapter of their choice at any point in time.

Line Control

Kevin Kram

Line control begins the minute you step in the water. If your flies aren’t in the water drifting over trout, you’re not going to catch very many. All too often, I see anglers fussing around with their line, trying to get it out of the guides, trying to get enough line out to cast, trying to get the line unwrapped from their rod, reel, and themselves. This is wasting valuable fishing time, and it is also frustrating. Here are a few simple tips to help.

Double It Over:
When you begin your day and you’re stringing up your fly rod, don’t try to feed the leader through the guides. Double the fly line over and feed it through the guides. This will almost ensure that you won’t miss any guides because it’s much easier to see and handle. Also, if you drop the line, it will not fall through all the ll cast the line out toward the direction you’re going to fish. You can now either begin casting or continue to strip more line off the reel. Either way, the line is out of the rod and you’re not going to have any tangles.

Moving On:
When you’re done fishing, point the rod toward the water’s surface as you reel in. This will prevent the line from wrapping around the rod tip, as the water surface The fly that is hooked on the guide will instantly drop off, and you’re ready to fish or strip more line off the reel.
